At bareMinerals, “Women Are Everything”

By Genevieve Ernst | March 7, 2019

At bareMinerals, we believe in women. With every product we create, our mission is — and always has been — to help women feel like the best version of themselves. It’s in our DNA to celebrate what a woman can do when she feels beautiful, confident and unstoppable. On the occasion of International Women’s Day, we spoke to members of our own team about strength, great advice from other women, and #BalanceforBetter.

5 Questions on International Women’s Day

We invited our team to tell us what they believe women are. So many people said, “Women are strong.” Tell us about the strength you see in women and what makes it so unique.

Jill Scalamandre, President: Women are caretakers, nurturers, listeners, multitaskers and decision makers. There is a strength that results from these traits. Inner strength, will and humility are leadership strengths often found in women.

Angelica DelPriore, Senior Vice President, Global Creative: I think the strength in women today is being proud of their femininity — because it’s what makes us women! It’s having no fear in being a woman because of all of the qualities we have.

Lee Etheridge, Executive Director, Global Education & Consumer Experience: It’s the optimism. Looking for what they CAN do in a life, work, or family situation — so many women I have met over the years focus on the opportunities and possibilities when faced with a challenge, problem or adversity.

This year’s International Women’s Day theme is #BalanceforBetter, highlighting the importance of a gender-balanced world. As a leader, why is balance such an essential goal?

Jill: We are a better, richer world for allowing everyone a seat at the table — and to teach us something.

Angelica: You need to have multiple perspectives – it’s not just male-female. Having those different points of view — different genders, nationalities, upbringings, backgrounds — adds a lot of balance and harmony. Having that diversity adds richness to a work environment. You need all of it!

Lee: Good ideas come from anywhere and everyone. I have always tried to surround myself with people who are skilled in other areas, have a different way of working or thinking than me, have an opposite style or approach, can challenge and disagree, provide feedback… This way, we can achieve a more balanced, fair approach to tasks, problem solving or projects.

What’s one piece of good advice you’ve received from a woman in your life?

Jill: My mom gave me the best advice: It’s OK to fail; from failure comes growth.

Angelica: From my sister, “If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”

Lee: “Help where you can and take help when you need it. This allows growth all around.” – Dr Amanda Foo-Ryland, a friend and mentor.

What’s one lesson you pass on to the women you mentor?

Jill: Never think you know it all. Everyone has something to learn.

Angelica: Always be yourself. ALWAYS. And find what really drives you. What do you feel most passionate about? Keep doing that, and you’ll never feel like you’re doing work — or it won’t feel too hard. Life’s easier when you lean into what you feel most passionate about.

Lee: I learnt this very early on in my career from Sharron Lowe, friend and mentor: “If you do not like something, then change it. If you cannot change it, then change the way you feel about it; you can control the way you respond or feel about situations.”

What’s one way you’ll be celebrating today?

Jill: I am going to give thanks to all the women in my life who have helped me along my life journey. From my grandmother to my mom, to my friends and sisters-in-law. These are women who have helped me grow as a person.

Angelica: One way anyone can celebrate is to send a message to a woman you admire — or many women you admire — and tell them why! Support them, and celebrate them. Celebrate somebody that you know.

Lee: It’s ironic, but I fly off to New York for 2 weeks on Sunday, away from my husband and son, so I will be spending it without the two most important men in my life, being grateful for their love and support.

So today, give thanks to the women in your life who have helped you along the way. And don’t forget yourself! Happy International Women’s Day from all of us at bareMinerals.
