Protect, Nourish and Improve Your Skin with Vitamin E

There are a few big-name vitamins worth incorporating into your skincare regimen, and vitamin E is right up there at the top of the list. Vitamin E is a multi-tasking hero that nourishes your skin — keeping you looking vibrant and healthy.

What is Vitamin E?

Long story short, vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant. “There are eight different types of vitamin E, and the most common form in skincare are tocopherol and tocopheryl acetate. There are different variations of tocopherol as well, and the most effective are gamma and delta tocopherols as they work best as antioxidants,” explains Dr. Michele Green, a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist based in New York City.

She adds that, in high enough concentrations, vitamin E can also help preserve the efficacy of your products so you can reap their maximum benefits. Talk about a true hero.

What’s the Big Deal with Antioxidants, Anyway?

To better understand all these vitamin E benefits, it’s important to understand what antioxidants can do for your skin. Basically, they help prevent oxidation (hence the name anti-oxidant) that’s caused by UV rays, pollutants, and our body’s natural metabolic process. All of the above cause premature signs of aging, including fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, dullness and skin laxity.

“Antioxidants are essential to the overall health of our bodies, including the health of our skin,” explains Dr. Green.

Joshua Ross, celebrity aesthetician and founder of SkinLab in Los Angeles, California, puts it this way: “Think of your skin like a piece of fruit; when preserved and sealed in the refrigerator, it will keep longer because it won’t oxidize, versus out on the counter it can spoil quickly as it begins to oxidize.”

Vitamin E in Skincare: A Healing Ingredient

In addition to its antioxidant powers, vitamin E in skincare can be extremely beneficial.

“Vitamin E is known to give you radiant and smoother-looking skin,” Dr. Green notes. “Further, this ingredient is also known for its ability to improve skin texture.”

Many skin types benefit from vitamin E, and it’s especially helpful for those who are exposed to the sun and oxidative stress from living in major cities with high pollution, says Ross. He adds, “As always, with all your skincare, you need to look at the overall formulation — make sure the vitamin E product you move forward with doesn’t include any harmful ingredients.”
