6 Fitness Apps to Keep You Accountable & Motivated
Need a little fitness motivation? Let’s be honest: it’s not always easy to hold ourselves accountable when it comes to eating well and keeping track of our workouts. Luckily, in this ever-so-modern world that we live in, there are a growing number of apps to help. Whether you need a nudge to go for a run or like seeing your hard work in a visually satisfying way, the six apps below will help you nurture and commit to your healthiest self.
8fit
What it is: A colorful fitness and nutrition tracking app that has the option for customized meal plans, personalized workouts and step-by-step guidance
What you get: Instead of just giving you a tracker for your exercise and nutrition goals, this app gives you the tools to help you achieve them. Whether you crave more information about the foods you’re eating, need help coming up with delicious recipes and new exercises to add to your routine, or simply want an app to track your daily dedication to your health, 8fit is for you. It doesn’t hurt that it’s pretty to look at.
What it costs: $24.99 per month, $59.99 for six months, or $79.99 for 12 months
Why I love it: Rather than just providing users with random workouts and health assistance, this app takes your goals into consideration when providing tips and exercise suggestions. By constantly gaining access to new and improved meals and workouts, users are less likely to get burnt out on the same song and dance over and over again, and more inclined to hold themselves accountable for a longer period of time. Additionally, you can set workout reminders directly in the app so that 30 minutes of yoga you meant to do doesn’t slip your mind.
Body by Blogilates
What it is: A health and wellness app that helps you train and eat like YouTube fitness influencer Cassey Ho
What you get: A series of workout videos for every body part, specific workouts for every day of the week, dozens of healthy recipes, a place to track your workouts and diet, and a forum to share your experience with other app users
What it costs: $3.99 per month or $39.99 per year
Why I love it: Cassey uploads new workouts every four weeks to help users avoid plateauing when relying on her workouts. However, my favorite thing about the app is that Ho has a Cheap Clean Eats section which addresses the reality that eating healthy doesn’t have to be expensive. By providing users with a bunch of different nutritious, affordable meal options, it’s more likely that they’ll stay on track with their long-term fitness goals.
MyFitnessPal
What it is: A meal, exercise and physique tracking system that helps you stay on top of your health and fitness goals one day at a time
What you get: The ability to set goals, track your meals, macros, nutrients, water intake, exercise, measurements, progress photos and more
What it costs: Free to download; $9.99 per month or $49.99 per year for premium
Why I love it: The premium offering is great for tracking whether your diet is balanced and you’re getting enough nutrients, though if you download the free version, you do get to see your daily overall macros: the distribution of carbohydrates, fats and proteins you consume. Also, their food database has thousands of different store-bought items, as well as restaurant offerings so that you can easily track your nutrition whether you eat out or at home. Plus, it links to a number of activity apps to let you easily track your exercise, though you also have the option to manually input it.
Streaks Workout
What it is: An app that lets you visually track your workout streaks
What you get: Dozens of different workout routines categorized by Quick, Everyday, Tough and Extreme (~6 minutes, ~12 minutes, ~18 minutes and ~30 minutes respectively). Each workout is made up of movements that you select when downloading the app. If you ever want to add more exercises to your routine, simply tap and hold the exercise so that it will be in the roundup of movements to choose from for the next random selection.
What it costs: A one-time payment of $3.99
Why I love it: It motivates me to see how many days in a row I’ve committed to forming a new habit, especially when it comes to my health. So this app is a must-have for me; it lets me visually see how many days per week and per month that I’ve set aside even just a few minutes to cater to my core and body as a whole. Additionally, if you don’t want to track one of the pre-made workouts, you can create your own by selecting one of the dozens of exercises within the app or adding your own to the database. From there, layer the exercises you’d like in your workouts, along with any rest periods in between each movement, and track accordingly. Since you can choose your movement options, this is great for people who have limitations or injuries to avoid.
Stacked
What it is: A top-rated workout tracker that’s geared towards goal-setting and offering tools to help achieve those goals
What you get: A place to visualize your goals and track progress. Within the app you can track pre-made workouts or your own custom-made routines.
What it costs: $4.99
Why I love it: Sometimes holding yourself accountable comes down to the idea that you’re plateauing and not having the energy to overcome a stagnant moment during your health and fitness journey. This app helps by letting you choose specific muscle groups you’d like to tone. From there, it selects exercises that will help accomplish those fitness goals so that you can perform a workout without the guesswork.
Charity Miles
What it is: An app that helps you earn money for the charity of your choice for every mile you walk, run, or bike
What you get: If being able to visually log your routine and witness your progress over graphs isn’t enough to help hold yourself accountable, perhaps raising money for the charity of your choice — just by working out — will do the trick. With this app you donate 10 to 25 cents for every mile you bike, run or walk.
What it costs: Free for download
Why I love it: While the app itself helps you earn money from corporate sponsors, you can open it up to your friends and family too to help you fundraise even more money for the charity of your choice — whether you have a race coming up or simply want to work out and do some good while you’re at it.
