Avocado: An Unexpectedly Nourishing, Hydrating Ingredient for Your Skin

By Wendy Rose Gould | August 11, 2021

Even though we’d never pass up a hearty slice, avocado isn’t just for toast! This beloved green fruit is loaded up with skin-protecting antioxidants, incredible anti-inflammatory qualities, and fatty acids that help keep your skin looking and feeling supple, hydrated, and gorgeous.

True to our nature-first ethos here at bareMinerals, avocado is a shining ingredient in our Mineralist Lasting Eyeliner. We’re excited to tell you all about this creamy, clean, vegan formulation, but let’s first take a minute to discuss the wonders of avocado as a skincare ingredient.

Skincare Benefits of Avocado

When we talk about avocado in skincare, we’re typically referring to avocado oil. This dense, highly nourishing oil benefits your skin in several ways.

It Contains Antioxidant & Anti-Inflammatory Properties

The oil extracted from the pulp of the avocado—AKA the tasty, bright green center—is rich in antioxidants. When applied topically as a skincare product or cosmetic, antioxidants can help protect your skin from environmental damage that can create premature signs of aging. We’re talking fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, and laxity.

“Antioxidants are a key component to skincare,” says Dr. Lina Kennedy, a board-certified dermatologist based in Corona Del Mar, Calif. “As we go about our day, we are exposed to numerous environmental aggressors like UV [rays] and pollution. This exposure leads to oxidative damage caused by free radicals. Antioxidants are substances that can neutralize these free radicals and thereby protect our skin.”

In addition to antioxidants, avocado oil is also filled with anti-inflammatory agents that help keep our skin feeling calm and protected. In terms of nutrients, avocado oil contains vitamins A, C, E, beta carotene, and lecithin.

Hydrating & Moisturizing

Avocado oil is also full of fatty acids, which are essential in helping our cells retain water. Specifically, avocado oil contains alpha linolenic (Omega 3) and linoleic (Omega 6) acids. Dr. Kennedy says, “These [fatty acids] are important to maintain a healthy skin barrier function and to lock in hydration. Ultimately, they lead to more supple, youthful looking skin.”

Avocado oil is also considered an emollient, which are moisturizers that create a barrier over our skin to prevent excess moisture from evaporating via trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL). “[Emollient] products soften the skin,” explains Dr. Kennedy. “They can also provide relief from itching and dryness as they do a great job of locking in moisture.”

An extra bonus of this emollient quality is that it creates a creamy consistency in product formulations. This is especially helpful when it comes to eye makeup, including eyeliner, since it lends to an effortless, tug-free glide and improved hydration.

Meet Mineralist Lasting Eyeliner

Inspired by beautiful minerals and glimmering gemstones, bareMinerals Mineralist Lasting Eyeliner comes in eight richly pigmented colors ranging from matte black onyx to prismatic garnet.

The clean, vegan formula glides on smoothly and stays creamy just long enough to allow for blending before settling into a long-wear finish. That translates to reliable, saturated color that won’t betray you by smudging, budging, or flaking—for up to 12 hours. They’re even waterproof.

In addition to nourishing and hydrating avocado oil, these high-performance eyeliners are formulated with vitamin-rich aloe vera extract and mineral pigments that deliver impressively rich color payoff.

Our Lasting Eyeliners pair perfectly with the Mineralist Eyeshadow Palettes, which are available in six colors inspired by nature’s breathtaking beauty. Think sundrenched mountain vistas, crisp icy waters, and blooming gardens. When using both products together, you can create everything from subtle daytime looks to bold smoky eyes.

You’ll look great, of course, but you’ll also feel good knowing that both the Mineralist Eyeshadow Palettes and Lasting Eyeliners feature eco-conscious packaging. The palettes are made with zero plastic and are fully recyclable and the eyeliners are made with minimal plastic.
